Subject: Reading and Phonics

At Orchard Head, we place great value on teaching our children the skills that they need to read, understand and enjoy books, newspapers and other text types.

In Upper Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, we use LCP Phonics and Phonics Play to promote and teach reading and spelling skills. LCP phonics follows the programme of study from Letters and Sounds. We use a range of games, interactive resources and teaching tools to engage, stimulate and support learners at each phase. We link our Guided Reading teaching to the phonics taught and we use a range of fiction and non-fiction books, including Oxford Reading Tree, Floppy Phonics, Songbirds and Project X.

We begin Guided Reading in Upper Foundation Stage in small groups and in Key Stage 1 and 2, we progress to whole class reading sessions to further develop children’s reading skills. When teaching reading, teachers ask questions around the text, allowing children to look for clues in the text, ask and answer questions about the text, and consolidate their knowledge and understanding of different text types.
